R.I. P. Kevin McCarthy

My regret from last year's Fort Lauderdale Film Festival was not getting my picture taken with Kevin McCarthy, however I took some great pictures of the man, his wife and festival attendees. A class act, he will be missed.

This is what he had to say when receiving his award last October;

Here is a link to a happier time with Mr. McCarthy last October;

Kevin McCarthy passed away last Saturday, September 11. Last year the 96 year old actor was honored by the "Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival" for his professional achievements; whether performing in first run plays on Broadway or television episodes like "The Twillight Zone" or classic films like "The Misfits" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."

Relying on a wheelchair for mobility, the actor accepted his award and revealed a touching story about how he, his sister, author Mary McCarthy, and two brothers were orphaned when their parents died in the 1918 influenza epidemic. Despite his physical handicaps, McCarthy expressed the joy of being alive and living a blessed life.

This was evidenced on the annual "FLiFF" cruise. McCarthy flirted with the Entre Nous president when it was time to disembark. With a big grin on his face, Mr. McCarthy was Peck's Bad Boy and the crowd loved it.

He needed assistance to get in and out of a car, I stood near to make sure that he could not fall down. Despite the pain, the old actor accepted his situation with stoicism. When he settled into his seat, I cracked a joke,
“Now you are ready for a rematch with Martin Short for **Inner Space Part 2.**
Mr. McCarthy roared with genuine laughter. This moment with Kevin and Kate McCarthy will always be a treasured moment for this journalist.
