|Nov. 21st, 2008 03:16 pm "Quantum of Solace" is as confusing as the title|
Perhaps it was the high standards set by previous James Bond movie, **Casino Royale,** the new 007 movie, **Quantum of Solace** has had mediocre reviews at best. **Quantum of Solace** is a step above some of Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore's sillier Bond movies. Leave a comment
In fact, **Quantum of Solace** is closer in spirit to Sir Roger Moore's grittier **For Your Eyes Only.** Ironically "Quantum of Solace** is a short story from author Ian Fleming's collection titled, **For Your Eyes Only.** Not that Ian Fleming's short story has anything to do with the new movie starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007.
**Quantum of Solace** opens a few minutes after the climax of "Casino Royale." Bond has captured the notorious Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), a man involved with the death of James Bond's lover. After a furious car chase along the Italian mountains, Bond hands Mr. White over to his boss, M (Judi Dench). Within moments treachery and conspiracy reveal itself and and Bond travels to South America to capture Mr. White and his organization.
Bond's first prime suspect is Dominic Green (Mathieu Amalric). Known worldwide as a philanthropic environmental activist, Greene has ulterior motives involving Bolivia's water supply. Greene is associated with General Medrano (Joaquín Cosio), a military man who would like to become supreme Generalissimo. Early in his military career, Medrano burned down the house of Camille (Olga Kurylenko). Camille seeks revenge upon the future Bolivian Dictator.
**Quantum of Solace** has some great James Bond moments with reflective memories. There is a feminine victim who dies by skin suffocation, much like Shirley Eaton's iconic vision in **Goldfinger.** There are chases that involve running, jumping, planes, automobiles and boats.
Unfortunately, the action sequence in **Quantum of Solance** disappoint. There must of been some great stunts performed, but the action is lost in either the camera frame or by attention deficit disorder editing. EON Producers take notice- you are JAMES BOND, not imitation Jason Bourne rip-off. Missing from **Quantum of Solace** are the clever moments that made **Casino Royale** both entertaining and clever.
Thus far, **Quantum of Solace** has earned over 100 million dollars in box office gross during these bleak economic times. This goes to show that if a business creates a product that people want, people will purchase the product. While not the best Bond, **Quantum of Solace** provides two hours of escapist entertainment that has been missing in most of the mainstream movies this year.
