2007 broke box office records, yet it was from the strength of a few movies in which a climatic trilogy was concluded. In fact this year featured at least 13 movies that were the 3rd part of a trilogy.
Overall the motion picture industry lost money, with "Grindhouse" being one of the biggest box office losers of the year. The Quentin Taratino/Robert Rodriquez double featured earned 25 million dollars at the box office, but cost the fledgling Weinstein Studios an estimated 53 million dollars to produce.
It is a hard sale to motivate people to see big budgeted homages to films that were considered trailer trash from the 1970s time of exploitation.
