Based on Zora Neale Hurston novel, "Their Eyes Were Watching God" was produced by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions and starred Halle Berry as the protagonist Janie. The film opens with a barefoot Janie returning to Eatonville, Florida from the swamplands. The town gossips, but Janie could care less. As she talks to her confidant, the film flashbacks to her earlier days before Eatonville became a city.

In some cases, Janie can be seen as the negro version of Scarlett O'Hara from "Gone with the Wind," a self obsessed opportunist. When she finds her Ashley Wilkes, Janie's goals become less materialistic, could the same be said of Scarlett O'Hara?

"Their Eyes Were Watching God" aired in Spring of 2005 and garnered a few Emmy nominations. The DVD contains a few extra scenes of lovemaking, which were probably cut from national broadcast, making "Their Eyes Were Watching God" rated PG.
