The Living Room Theater Opens on the FAU Boca Raton Campus

Our community is blessed with cultural opportunities, if one can step beyond slum reality programing exalted by low budget broadcast television. While today's economy is restrictive, people are still filling performing arts auditoriums, if they are convinced that they are receiving a good quality product. One such enterprise is **The Living Room Theater,** a unique partnership between private industry and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

With the creation of successful art house **Living Room Theater** in Portland, Oregon, proprietors Ernesto and Diego Rimoch were approached by the F.A.U. Department of Communication and Multi-Media to develop a quality classroom for their students. With their practical technical expertise, the four classrooms features a clear sound system with crisp digital images. On Monday thru Friday, from 9 AM until 5 PM, these four classrooms can seat forty-nine students per classroom.

However, on weekend and weekday evenings, **The Living Room Theater** is open to the public. **The Living Room Theater** features first run independent films and classic films, such as Alfred Hitchcock's **Psycho.** Given the 50 year anniversary and the digital remastering, Mother Bates has never looker scarier, at least that is what the patrons said as they exited a recent screening. Plans are underway to screen retrospective movies like **Casablanca,** **Singin' in the Rain** and potential Halloween screening of **The Shining.**

There is a commitment to screen modern independent motion pictures. **Client No.9** is a documentary about disgraced politician Elliot Spitzer, **Enter the Void** is a disturbing film about either a paranoid man or about a society seeking to conform individuals, while Kristen Scott Thomas stars in French romance titled **Leaving.** **Only When I Dance** is a Brazilian documentary about ballet, which should interest Diana and her mother.

Local opportunities will be granted to independent film makers. If one has a good quality trailer and digital print, along with high resolution poster, **The Living Room Theater** will screen a locally produced independent movie for one week, with options to hold the film over if the box office merits it. Besides experiencing intimate cinema, one can enjoy espresso coffee and gourmet international food at **The Living Room Theater. There are in negotiation to provide screenings for the **16th Annual Palm Beach International Film Festival* starting March 23, 2010. For CEO Diego Rimoch, the goal is good cultural business,
"We want people to come in and stay awhile, not just watch a movie and leave; it's a whole new movie-going experience!"

**The Living Room Theater** on the F.A.U. campus off Glades Road will host a grand opening party tonight from 6 - 8pm The $2.00 admission will feature free popcorn, free posters and free sodas. Let's hope that these private/public partnership like **The Miami City Ballet** and **The Living Room Theater** continues to feed the cultural hunger in our backyard.

Miami City Ballet presented "The Nutcracker Suite" with a special guest star

As a single mother, Rose Dawson knew that her daughter Diana would face physical challenges. From the age of three, Diana was enrolled in a ballet class to develop confidence through teamwork and exercise. Imagine a mother's tearful surprise when five years later, her daughter would be selected by the **Miami City Ballet** to perform in **The Nutcracker Suite** last weekend at the Kravis Performance Arts Center!

Leslie Caron visits Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival's Cinema Paradiso this weekend

For those seeking a return to Classic Hollywood Glamor this weekend, **The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival Cinema Paradiso** will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Leslie Caron, star of **An American in Paris,** **Lili** and **Gigi.**

While considering a worthy dance partner to both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly from 1950s musicals, Caron has worked steadily. On the big screen Caron costarred with Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche and Lena Olin, while on the small screen, Caron portrayed an elderly rape victim on **Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit," in which she won an Emmy Award.

Leslie Caron will accept her Lifetime Achievement Award starting at 6PM at Cinema Paradiso. After a retrospective screening of her career and Q & A hosted by Film Professor Foster Hirsch, Leslie Caron will host a book signing for her autobiography, **Thank Heaven.** Then on Saturday night, Leslie Caron sets sail on the SUN DREAM to host our annual **Winterfest Boat Parade.** For ticket information and prices for each event, contact Cinema Paradiso at (954) 525-FILM.

"Hemingway's Garden of Eden" reveals his F.Scott Fitzgerald side

After thirty three years, I returned to Ernest Hemingway's house in Key West last week. The tour guide shared with us a story that when Fidel Castro seized control of Cuba, Hemingway's manuscripts were lost in a Cuba bank safe. This theft of ideas added to Hemingway's despondency, which manifested with his suicide shortly there after. **Garden of Eden** surfaced in 1986 as one of Hemingway's lost manuscripts.

Begun circa 1946, **Garden of Eden** was unlike anything Papa Hemingway had ever written before. In fact **Garden of Eden** seems similar to the writing themes of Hemingway's professional rival, F.Scott Fitzgerald. Set on the French Rivera during the Jazz Age, the story details the honeymoon between a writer named David and a bored socialite Catherine. While gallivanting across the Mediterranean, both David and Catherine develop a sexual intimacy that crosses the identity line regarding gender expression.

With full frontal nudity and sensuous cinematography, **Hemingway's Garden of Eden** opens tomorrow at local movie theaters. The movie stars Mena Survari as the experimental Catherine, a rich flapper with too much time on her hands. Given her work in **America Pie** and **American Beauty,** Suvari presents a mature version of her earlier screen incarnations. Given their work together in **Factory Girl,** Suvari reunites with costar Jack Huston as David, a passive young man intrigued by his newlywed's sexual motives. As the third point of this erotic love triangle, Caterina Murino is Marita, an Italian women swept into David and Catherine's passionate role playing.

Despite my Jackie Collins narrative description of **Hemingway's Garden of Eden,** director John Irvin has crafted literary cinema. There is an emphasis on diction that sounds like a grand novel. Survari, Huston and Murino evoke a bygone era. Given Hemingway's iconic influence in classic Hollywood movies starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman and/or Spencer Tracy, ** Hemingway's Garden of Eden** is a story that could only be told in modern times.
