"Inception" is for the thinkaholic

Last weekend, ticket buyers invested sixty million dollars on a mystery called **Inception** and left the theatre groaning during the last scene. This weekend will tell in Christopher Nolan’s auteur expression has any staying power. While this director is best known for his latest **Batman Dark Knight** movies, Nolan’s independent projects like **Memento** and **Insomnia** have been thought provoking spectaculars. **Inception** is a film for the thinkacholics.

**Inception** starts off confused. Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) washes upon a shore and sees two children playing on the shore. Cobb is immediately apprehended and dragged into the boardroom of Saito (Ken Watanabe), a sinister old man who is more dangerous than he appears. Yet this is only a dream and Cobb is actually reading Saito’s mind to get information. Confused?

Once Ariande (Ellen Page) enters the story, the much needed exposition is explained. Cobb and his team consisting of Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Eames (Thomas Hardy), Ysuf (Dileep Rao) and Nash (Lukas Haas), are high tech thieves who steal people’s thoughts. The easiest way to access an individual’s thoughts is when they are sleeping. We learn at this point that Saito is Cobb’s boss.

With very little technical explanation about the science of this high tech thievery, the audience learns about the psychology of dreams. From this explanation we learn about the four states of dreams that one can have. One can have a dream within a dream. With Cobb’s scientific methods, the technology is available to have a dream within a dream (times 4).

Given Cobb’s genius, one would assume that this man would have some serious psychological issues. Cobb does. He is haunted by guilt by the loss of his wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard) and the way Cobb departed his two little children. Cobb accepts one last assignment, so that he can go home and see his two children.

As actor Leonardo DiCaprio said in a recent NPR radio interview, he is prone to playing “Unreliable heroes.” With his work in **Shutter Island** and **Inception,** DiCaprio has achieved his goal in 2010. DiCaprio is assisted by Christopher Nolan’s reliable troupe of ensemble players, in particularly Cillian Murphy as the target for Cobb’s next assignment.

If one is too confused by the plot and character motivation, then writer/director Nolan fills the screen with unforgettable visuals. **Inception** is a big film meant to be seen on the big screen, the bigger, the better. **Inception** will be screened at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery IMAX Theatre until August 12. **Inception** is an important film and will not be forgotten in this year’s Oscar race.

"The Extra Man" is Kevin Kline on his game

"The Extra Man" is pure New York with a touch of Palm Beach Society. Kevin Kline excels as a master of Balderdash.

Paul (**Little Miss Sunshine**) Dano portrays Louis Ives, a girlie man of sorts in **The Extra Man,** a film that should satisfy the **Eat Pray Love** crowd. Based on the book by Jonathan Ames, **The Extra Man** reflects upon the elitist culture portrayed in Edith Wharton and F. Scott Fitzgerald novels. Young Ives is mentored by Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline) who teaches his apprentice on the art of being **The Extra Man.**

Essentially, an **Extra Man** is a glorified freeloader, some one who gets into swanky parties and cotillions in either Upper East Side Manhattan or Palm Beach in the winter. Always a reliable gigolo to the eastside elite, Harrison introduces Ives to a coterie of quirky characters, among them; the horny Hart Sisters (Cathy Moriarty, Patti D'Arbanville) and the introvert Gershon (John C. Reilly). While paying his rent, Ives develops a crush with a coworker named Mary Powell (Katie Holmes), a devoted environmental crusader. In order to court Mary Powell, Ives must understand his own confused sexual psyche.

While lacking the marketing budget of **The Expendables** and **Eat Pray Love,** **La Soga** and **The Extra Man** will provide entertainment for their respective audiences.
