Majic 102.7’s Joe Johnson (Beatle fan and expert) who also hosts and produces the weekly syndicated show Beatle Brunch heard on over 100 stations nationwide. Prior to the screening, audience members will have a chance to win DVDs of the concert, George Harrison books, and CDs. After the film, Director Saul Swimmer, who recorded the legendary concert that made history, will be on hand for an audience discussion.
Former Beatle, George Harrison, pooled some of the greatest musicians of our time to perform in this very first concert to benefit a humanitarian cause...The Concert for Bangladesh. Held August 1,1971 at New York's Madison Square Garden, this spectacular concert featured performances by George Harrison, Ravi Shankar, Billy Preston, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Leon Russel and Eric Clapton among others. This concert alerted the world to the plight of Bangladeshis fighting a war of independence. The event raised 15 million dollars for UNICEF and the people of Bangladesh.
The tradition continues and recent benefit concerts such as Farm Aid, Live Aid, Band Aid, Live 8 and the Tibetan Freedom Concert have added a poignancy and awareness to causes that might otherwise have been less visible to the general public.
As so aptly stated by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan “George and his friends were Pioneers”.
