BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Face painting, scary stories and ice cream, Camp @ Your Library means lots of fun for children this summer. More than 20 youngsters, from Stage One Academy in Fort Lauderdale, enjoyed a morning of varying activities at the Main Library on Monday, June 26. Teen volunteers skilled in face painting turned boys into spider man and the green hornet while girls preferred butterfly faces in sparkly pink paint.
Cinema Dave, all 6’ 3” of him, Audio Visual Popular Books Librarian, was called into service to read "Tailypo," written by Jan Wahl and illustrated by Wil Clay. Using his booming, baritone voice, Montalbano entertained the elementary school-age children as they gathered round him to hear the Appalachian folk tale.
“I enjoy good old fashion story time, the roots of story telling. I give a nod to one of my favorite readers of all time, Boris Karloff,” Cinema Dave said.
Camp @ Your Library is the creation of Library graduate intern Sunem Beaton-Garcia.
“I wanted children to enjoy a morning of summer fun and spooky camp-like stories and I invited a seasoned librarian to join the fun,” said Library graduate intern Sunem Beaton-Garcia, who created Camp @ Your Library. “It also gives our teens a chance to have fun with the younger children.”
The next Camp @ Your Library is planned for July 24. Depending on the weather, Camp @ Your Library is held outdoors on the Main Library plaza or on the 8th floor of the Main Library. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Libraries. To register, call 954-357-7504.
