Florida Center for the Book at Broward County Library will launch its Big Read program in celebration of the classic crime fiction novel, The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett with a special kick-off event on Thursday, March 6 at 7pm at Broward County Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. The Big Read in Broward County is presented in partnership with Broward County Libraries Division, Broward Public Library Foundation, The Writers’ Network of South Florida and Mystery Writers of America – Florida Chapter.

The kick-off event will feature a free interactive Murder Mystery Theatre show produced by Murder on the Beach Entertainment. Free copies of The Maltese Falcon will be given away to the first 100 people who arrive for the show. Call (954) 357-7401 to make reservations.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents the Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Broward County is one of 127 communities nationwide participating in the Big Read in the spring of 2008. From March 1 – April 1 our community will celebrate The Maltese Falcon with a full calendar of events including book discussions and film screenings, as well as the special events listed below:
