I was a card carrying member of the American film Institute.
In fact, I still have some of the magazines lying around.
It is fun to acknowledge some of the hit and misses of those years.
("Alien" and "Carny"). Mostly I think of AFI as an organization of missed opportunities.
On Tuesday, June 21, 2005 AFI held another special on the CBS Network and featured the wisdom of James Brolin, Buck Henry and Jennifer Grey. It was an interesting affair featuring 100 movie quotes. In the final stretch, "Sunset Boulevard" and "Casablanca" received two quotes apiece. While I was glad to see that "The Godfather" and "Gone with the Wind" received the last tow spots, I was once again disappointed.
At least two john Wayne movies should have been in the top ten,
easily "The Searchers" and "The Shootist."
After seeing "The Searchers," Buddy Holly wrote a song
based on Ethan Edwards infamous line,
"That will be the day."
In "The Shootist,"
J.B. Books sums up his code of honor with the following words,
"I won't be wronged,"
I won't be insulted and I won't be laid a hand on.
I don't do these things from other people
and I expect the same from them."
