Apr. 24th, 2007 08:27 pm Scotty and Gordo return to space

James Doohan, alias "Star Trek's Scotty," will be blasted off into space this Saturday from New Mexico.

Doohan will be memorialized by having a portion of his cremated remains shot into space. Original Series writer/director/producer John Meredyth Lucas and astronaut Gordon Cooper are also part of the same launch, dubbed the Legacy Flight. A public memorial service will take place in Alamagordo on Friday, April 27, and the launch will occur Saturday the 28th at Spaceport America north of Las Cruces.

I did not learn until just a few years ago that James Doohan and some other Star Trek cast members found William Shatner insufferable. Doohan is said to have enjoyed zinging the rarely attending Shatner at Star Trek conventions. They always seemed like such close buddies when performing together which suggests their acting abilities.

One of Doohan's fingers was shot off in WW II during the Normandy D Day Invasion. When filming he usually kept the missing finger away from the camera but at times it was seen by careful viewers. For close ups of his hands a hand double actor was used.

I read the books by Shatner, Nichols and Takei and they were in agreement with Doohan. If one looks at the movie series, Captain Kirk always seemed to have a moment alone to save the Enterprise from blowing up. I am ready for my close up Mr. DeMille...ooops..I mean Mr. Roddenberry!
